Diesel and Marine Group is pleased to welcome Alvin Poon as Asia Pacific Sales Manager.

A specialist in marine engineering with a period spent in the armed services, Alvin has had a varied career which started in 1998 and includes more than ten years of service to MAN Diesel & Turbo, Singapore. We spoke with him to discuss his education and work history.

You initially started your career in 1998 upon graduating, what did you study and what was your first role?
I studied for a diploma in Marine Engineering in 1996 and graduated two years later. Subsequently, I started my career working as a sea going marine engineer onboard a container vessel with Keppel T&T for 12 months, and was then called upon to complete my National Service.

You mentioned that you spent two years of National Service in the Singaporean army, this must have been difficult at the start of your career?
Although I was enlisted into the army for two years, I attended night classes during this time and completed an advanced diploma in Strategic Marketing. In 2001 I was able to resume full-time studies and enrolled at the National University of Singapore, whereby I took a degree in mechanical engineering and graduated in 2004.

It must have been quite an achievement to study whilst completing National Service, and your mechanical engineering degree is a useful addition to your diploma, what happened next?
I started work briefly as a project engineer for Sembawang Shipyard on jack-up rigs, before joining MAN Diesel & Turbo Singapore in January 2006. I held the post with MAN for more than 10 years with roles in both new-sales and after-sales. I specialised across low, medium and high-speed diesel engine ranges. In 2016 I was headhunted to join Wärtsilä Singapore to steer their business development plans in marketing environmental products such as scrubbers, ballast water systems and new digital technology, while still selling retrofit projects and service and supply agreements/contracts for spare parts.

What do you like like to do outside of work?
In my spare time I have a strong interest in collecting mechanical antique watches, and am into building and maintaining marine aquariums. I also enjoy swimming and cycling.

Everyone at Diesel and Marine Group wishes Alvin the very best of luck in his new role as Asia Pacific Sales Manager.
